Red Cloud's War took place from 1866 to 1868. Red Cloud, an Oglala Lakota war chief, led an alliance of Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes against the U.S. Army and its Crow allies for control over the Powder River territory. It was the first and last time Native Americans won a war against the U.S. But it wasn't the end of hostilities, which were fueled by incursions of gold miners into the Montana gold fields through land that had been guaranteed to the tribes, using up resources they needed. When gold was discovered in the Black Hills, the Great Sioux War of 1876 was the result. In that war, the Indians lost possession of the sacred Paha Sapa (Black Hills), which the Lakota called the Heart of Everything That Is. Red Cloud died in 1909 and was buried on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.
The drawing is graphite on 8" x 10" Bristol board. I digitally added dark brown to his irises. Prints of Red Cloud can be ordered at several different sizes!
